Dance Leotard Child
How do i respond to a young white girl that calls herself black?
im african american and i work for a cheer and dance company with children. Today one of my students passed the rest of my co-workers, came to me and said "Look! Im Black" She was wearing an all black Leotard with black tights and black jazz shoes. i didnt know what to say to her so i just smiled and nodded. How should i have responded??
It sounds like she is a young girl, maybe 5 or 6 yrs old? You could have said "Ahh I see you're wearing black clothes" and smiled. That would correct her, without making her feel self conscious, or making her think what she said was horribly racist. If she was young, she was probably just playing around, and didn't think anything of making a comment like that. Kids are innocent, until they're not. If she was older, I would have taken her aside and explained about skin color, and how it's not appropriate to make comments like that.
